Egham Rangers gain funding for their Suffragette 2018 Project!

Egham Rangers have been lucky enough to be granted funding for their project Suffragettes & Girlguiding! We will be exploring the links and shared attitudes that the Suffragettes in 1918 and Girlguiding have in common. Over March 2018 we will be taking part in lots of workshops that will teach the girls different ways that they can voice what they believe and become socially and politically articulate.

Inspired by the shared history and vision of the Suffragettes and GirlGuiding movements, and in conjunction with Royal Holloway’s ‘Vote100’ celebrations (funded by the Lottery Heritage Fund), Egham Rangers are on a journey to not only discover more about their own local and Guiding suffragist history, but to then use this history as way of engaging with current social and political discourse. What is my place in society? What does the notion of ‘female citizenship’ mean? Is my voice heard? How do I stand and speak up for what I believe in? Over the course of this project, Egham Rangers will seek answers to these questions through a variety of fun, relevant experiences: from attending suffragette exhibitions at museums; to visiting their local university where many of the Suffragettes attended; to participating in public speaking, body confidence and mindfulness workshops; to meeting current strong, female role models; to participating in debates as advocates for their peers. Each experience will assist the Rangers in formulating and designing their own ‘Modern Suffragist’ Challenge Badge Pack. The Badge, Egham Rangers hope, will offer GirlGuides all over the country (and perhaps the world) the chance to become educated on female political history, be engaged and inspired in notions of ‘female citizenship’, and most importantly, to recognise the worth and power of her own voice.

With big thanks to Royal Holloway and The Lottery Heritage fund for making everything possible.
